Preview: Japan Media Arts Festival (HMKV)

Since 1997, the Japan Media Arts Festival (JMAF) combines current pieces of media art with the newest developments in Japanese pop culture. Every year it awards the best works in the fields of art, entertainment, animation and manga. They are presented in a large exhibition in Tokyo which is on show in other cities of the world afterwards. After Beijing (2002), Shanghai (2007), Singapore (2008), Vienna (2009) and Istanbul (2010) the Dortmunder U will be the new location for the Japan Media Arts Festival. Visitors experience interactive installations, games, photographs, comics, music, anime and a film programme.

The programme of the JMAF DO11 covers all the different areas in the Dortmunder U (exhibition spaces, the cinema, club and others) and presents diverse cultural disciplines like media art, animation, manga and video games as equivalent forms of expression of a global culture.

Following the exhibition Proto Anime Cut, the Japan Media Arts Festival is the second high point of a focus on Japanese contemporary art and culture in the current programme of the Dortmunder U.
