Complete renewal for the "Flying Pictures": Popular art installation by Adolf Winkelmann gets fit for the next decades

Pigeons and fish, black and yellow foosball figures and foaming beer or a clear statement against the right: For ten years the "Flying Pictures" have been shining out into the world from the Dortmunder U. The installation consisting of 1.2 million LEDs with the sometimes funny, sometimes political, and often up-to-the-minute statements of the artist Adolf Winkelmann has long been part of Dortmund's cityscape and has received a great deal of attention both nationally and internationally. Since our opening 10 years ago, they have shone almost continuously. In the meantime, the installation has aged a little and is even damaged in places - but now the renewal is starting!

Starting Monday, the approximately 6000 LED lamellas on our roof, as well as the corresponding control modules will be replaced. In addition, the technology will receive an upgrade, so that the visual display of the flying pictures, the longevity and the energy efficiency will be significantly improved. This work will probably last until the end of the year. Until then, you will unfortunately have to do without the "Flying Pictures" - it is not possible to replace them during operation.

In addition, a new playback technology is required, which has yet to be procured. This will probably be installed in the first quarter of 2021, so that the Flying Pictures will have to pause again for a few weeks in February 2021.
