RuhrKunstUrban – Museum finds City

RuhrKunstUrban – Museum finds City

A new education project of the RuhrKunstMuseenDuration 2019 - 2022

The 21 art museums in the Ruhr region joined forces back in 2010 to form the RuhrKunstMuseen (RKM) network. Since then, this network has also established itself outside the region with its programs and special educational and mediation offerings. In order to strengthen these neighborhoods, the RKM are striving for a continuous continuation of the conceptual, content-related and practical cooperation in various areas of cultural work.

Education programs such as Collection Tours, the development and coordination of a joint school matrix, and RuhrKunstNachbarn have deepened and enriched the collaboration as successfully implemented offerings. Following on directly from the RuhrKunstNachbarn project, the new educational program RuhrKunstUrban, once again funded by the Mercator Foundation, increasingly focuses on the urban environment of the students and aims to create a publicly visible project in the respective urban space. The examination of the diversity of urban spaces holds great potential in terms of content and offers valuable impulses for artistic processes in the work with students.

Based on the collections of the RuhrKunstMuseen, children and young people learn artistic approaches and strategies that support and stimulate them to consciously perceive urban space and actively influence it. In addition to the school as a familiar place and the museum as an extracurricular place, the mediation project profiles a project space in the city as a "third place". The aim is to win over places that are embedded in already existing urban structures as cooperation partners and to establish them for cultural education work.

An important concern of the RKM is a visible opening into and a stable networking with the urban society, which should last beyond the project through further events and continuous cooperation. The RKM's artistic education department sees this opening to the city through the mediation project as strengthening the museums. A broader visibility in the urban environment should break down barriers and win multipliers for the mediation work.

The Artistic Education of the RKM also hopes that RuhrKunstUrban will establish a cooperation with schools and other educational partners, whose needs will be actively included from the beginning of the project development. In a joint exchange already in the conception phase, offers and programs are developed that take up the interests of potential cooperation partners.
Finally, the urban space also experiences artistic activation and change through the project work. The artistic interventions by students visualize museum education work and a personal appropriation of public space.
