"Art must shout to be heard."VALIE EXPORT

As a media and performance artist, VALIE EXPORT (* 1940) is one of the most important international artists of the present day. Her works are represented in collections of international museums, including the Tate Modern London, MOMA New York, MUMOK Vienna and the Julia Stoschek Collection, Düsseldorf.

VALIE EXPORT addresses and questions society's view of our body image and that of women in particular. What influence do our language, our environment and origin have on our own body? What image is constructed by the media, which to this day contribute to the perception of stereotypes? Her performances and actions, especially in the 60s and 70s, are provocative and direct. They cause an uproar in the bourgeois public. The reason for this: it is her own body on which she exemplifies her views and deconstructions. It is at the center and exposes what was previously invisible.

The MO Art Prize "Follow me Dada and Fluxus" is awarded annually by the Friends of the Museum Ostwall e.V. to expand the collection in the area of Fluxus and its current consequences.

"We are very pleased that VALIE EXPORT, central protagonist of feminism and pioneer of experimental film, will receive the MO Art Award 2020. Addressing gender and identity issues is natural for museums in the 21st century. Women artists have been significantly underrepresented in MO's collection, and feminist art since the 1960s is scarcely represented. Therefore, a work by VALIE EXPORT represents an outstanding addition to the museum's collection."Regina Selter, Deputy Director of the Museum Ostwall

The art award ceremony scheduled for December has been postponed until April 2021 due to corona. The exhibition will open as soon as the museums are allowed to receive visitors again.
