As part of the measures adopted by the federal and state governments to contain the corona pandemic, the Dortmunder U and the Museum Ostwall will remain closed from November 2 until November 30, 2020.

The special exhibition "Rainer Fetting" was shown in summer 2020 at Gottorf Castle in Schleswig under the title "Here are the lemons".  It is now presented as a second exhibition station from 29.11.2020 to 14.03.2021 in the Dortmunder U on the exhibition area on level 6.

Here visitors can experience over 130 works by Rainer Fetting from around five decades - from the mid-1970s to the present day. The selection of paintings, bronzes and graphic works is the result of close cooperation with the artist, who offers a deep insight into his multifaceted oeuvre.

Fetting belonged to a group of artists who became known around 1980 under the label "Neue Wilde" and undertook a fundamental renewal of art in the 1970/80s. The paintings of the young artists are emotional and direct, fierce and very colorful. Fetting's work in particular shows figurative motifs that are composed with all their fresh vitality and, despite the raw brushstroke, are anything but unconsciously thrown away: Fetting's art is direct and vital, his painterly execution vibrates, lives and pulsates, and even today Fetting is one of the most important German artists of the present day. One of his most famous works is the portrait of Willy Brandt in the Berlin SPD headquarters.

The two main themes of his work are also reflected in the exhibition: man and landscape. In Dortmund, his portraits can be seen from early times to the present day. The other side of his image of man - the male nude - is also centrally represented and mainly presents Desmond Cadogan, who has been Fetting's most important model since 1984. In the exhibition, this is reflected in scenes of the big city and the natural landscape in marked contrast to each other. Paintings from Berlin and New York with urban themes such as streets, clubs and nightlife are juxtaposed with beach scenes of Sylt.

Born in Wilhelmshaven in 1949, Fetting went to the University of Fine Arts in West Berlin in 1972 - at that time a hotspot of the student revolt and the gay scene. From 1983 to 1994 Fetting lived in New York, which became a formative place of freedom and inspiration for him.
