Especially in times of social distancing, computer games offer the possibility of escapism, of escaping into virtual worlds. However, players often do not flee into 'better worlds', but into dark war zones or post-apocalyptic scenarios. The lecture explores why most computer games create a dystopian image of the world and why utopias - apparently - play a much rarer role there.

Prof. Dr. Benjamin Beil is Professor of Media Studies with a focus on digital culture at the University of Cologne and conducts research on game studies, television series, participatory media cultures, and inter- and transmediality.
