At the beginning of the 20th century, Carl Bauer, the owner of a steam weaving mill in the Westphalian village of Laer near Münster, took photographs of his factory, his family and his life in the country. Around 400 glass plate negatives were kept in family possession and impressively document the everyday culture one hundred years ago.

A teaching research project of the master's course in cultural analysis and cultural mediation at the TU Dortmund University has taken up these special images. The main focus was on clothing and equipment. The dense tradition of the collection allowed to identify and interpret moments as well as fashions of modernity.

The exhibition now presents for the first time a selection of these photographs, reflects current research approaches to private photography and shows that not only the city but also the country was fashionable and modern.
