Innovative Citizen 2018 - Crowdfunding has started!

Innovative Citizen 2018

Getting to know technology and DIY

Upcycling, Do It Yourself, self-sufficiency in urban areas. From the 26th to the 28th of October, the Innovative Citizen Festival will again take place in Dortmund. Over the course of three days the festival will provide fresh ideas for an autonomous approach to using technology and is inviting you to become a “maker” yourself.

Technology has fully penetrated our daily lives while innovations are developed much faster and much more frequently. That’s why for its fifth anniversary, the focus of the Innovative Citizen Festival lies again on the democratization of technology. Lectures, workshops and discussions will address the chances and possibilities of modern technology. But they will also tackle the issue of using new technologies in a smart and critical way and thereby finding new ways of living a self-determined life.

Sustainable use of resources

The Innovative Citizen Festival 2018, initiated by the Fraunhofer institute, the Dortmunder U, and the Folkwang University of the Arts, is all about familiarization and getting your hands dirty: festival visitors will have the opportunity to getting to know technology in numerous workshops revolving around the themes of Food and Farming, Digital Production, Circular City, and Textiles. Whether you want to ferment your own food or drinks, build a robot, or create designer lamps from trash: everyone has the opportunity to participate.

The goal of the Innovative Citizen Festival is to push the boundaries between consumer and producer as well as layperson and expert. Living together is also a focus point: “Circular City”, a project for utilizing unknown resources, offers exciting perspectives for creating a local creative and vibrant community. Upcycling (i.e. creating new products from “trash”) is just one example for a Circular City. Besides the workshops there will also be other events such as presentations, a party and the IC-Highland Games, where visitors can compete with each other in a series of small tasks.

Crowdfunding

In order to keep ticket fees affordable, reward workshop leaders and lecturers, and buy materials for the workshops, Innovative Citizen needs some help from the festival visitors. That’s why on the 22nd of August we have started a crowdfunding campaign. Supporters have the possibility to get cheaper tickets and combined tickets as well as complimentary offerings such as an IC reusable bag and a stay at a soon-to-be-built Tiny House.
